Equality & Diversity

Introduction - What is Kaleidoscope?

Kaleidoscope is the EMH Group’s “branding” for its Equality and Diversity strategy. The Kaleidoscope Project was approved by the EMH Board of Management in March 2003.

The idea grew from the concept of the kaleidoscope being made up of different shapes, sizes and colours that come together to form a constantly changing group of bright or interesting objects.

The society we live in and the communities EMH operates within are in the same way made up of a great diversity of people from different age groups, culture and religions with a range of disabilities and needs that are constantly changing.

The kaleidoscope scheme aims to define the diverse range of people and needs we serve and put in place policies and procedures to ensure that we monitor how we work, eliminate discrimination and promote community cohesion and equality of opportunity.

We aim to provide a high standard of service which is sensitive to difference in needs, language or culture.

We took the decision to “brand” our work to ensure that we raised the profile of this important issue and to, over time, assist in embedding the philosophy in the organisation making it part of everything we do.

The concept of equality and diversity is a significant move away from ‘Equal opportunities’ which was an acknowledgement that different people had to be given the right of equal treatment.  Equality and Diversity recognises that difference in itself is an object to be valued.
